“Poor Conditions” don’t mean “Poor Photography”!
What’s the most important thing in photography? Cameras? Lenses? No….. Light. Without light, photography wouldn’t be a thing. Photography literally means “light painting,” and learning to work with different lighting conditions is key to improving your craft.
I recently returned from Tromsø, Norway, expecting golden-hour landscapes but found only clouds and rain, sleet, wind and just miserable conditions all round. Not exactly conditions you’d associate with creating great images. Instead of giving up, I embraced the challenge and came away with some images I’m reasonably happy with. Here’s how you can do the same.
1. Use Contrast & Mood
Flat light isn’t bad—it’s just different. Without harsh shadows, you can create moody, cinematic shots by playing with contrast, reflections, and framing.
2. Composition Matters
With no dramatic light, composition is key. Use leading lines, symmetry, and layering to create engaging images. Elements like roads, fences, and shorelines can guide the viewer’s eye.
In this example I spotted the 2 fisherman as they were searching for their catches on the wooden pontoon. It was pretty bleak if I’m honest but I really like how the mountain in the background fades into the sky. The boat in the background as well also helps to give a sense of scale and I love the colour contrast of the water.
3. Look for Colour & Texture
Muted lighting makes colours pop and textures stand out. A bright jacket against a grey sky or rippling water can add vibrancy to an otherwise dull scene.
4. Embrace the Weather
Some of the best images come from stepping outside your comfort zone. Shooting in challenging conditions sharpens your skills and makes you a better photographer.
This guy in the image below was definitely stepping outside his comfort zone! It was absolutely freezing!!

So next time the weather isn’t ideal, go out and shoot anyway—you might be surprised by what you create.
Happy shooting!
